ELGA PRESS RELEASE
YORKSHIRE v HAMPSHIRE FOR COUNTY TITLE
Defending champions Yorkshire will meet Hampshire in a title showdown at the County Finals at Brokenhurst Manor on Friday.
Both teams have two wins apiece in the series so far, but Hampshire, the hosts, have edged into the lead on points.
On the second day’s play Hampshire swept aside Glamorgan 8-1 while Yorkshire beat Leicestershire and Rutland 6-3.
Hampshire captain Bridget Moore said: “My girls have been brilliant, absolutely fantastic. Now they just have to do it one more time – but it will be tough.”
Yorkshire demonstrated their grit in their match, which was a much tougher battle than the scoreline suggests.
The title-holders had edged ahead 2-1 in the foursomes but it was Leicestershire who dominated the singles over the opening holes. At the turn, they were up in four matches and all square in another. Only Yorkshire’s Emma Duggleby was up and she went on to score her county’s first point of the afternoon with a 6 and 4 win – helped by six birdies.
Her colleagues dug deep on the back nine. County champion Sara Garbutt and international Rachel Bell were both one down at the turn but each won their close encounters on the 18th . Meanwhile, 16-year-old Nikki Dunn, who had been all square after nine, took charge on the homeward half and won 3 and 1.
Relieved Yorkshire captain Sue Milner spoke for the army of green-clad spectators when she said afterwards: “They keep doing this to us! We should be used to it by now.”
She, too, is looking forward to a challenging match on Friday. “It will be a hard match, we know that. We all want to win – and to win with a really good finish.”
Leicestershire captain Helen Summ paid tribute to her players. “I am very proud of them. I have seen some excellent golf by both sides but exceptional play by my girls.”
The outcome of the match between Glamorgan and Leicestershire will determine third place.
