NORTHAMPTONSHIRE PAIR WIN AUSTRALIAN SPOONS
Northamptonshire golfers win Australian Spoons Northamptonshire golfers Ada Parr and Jo Price have brought the first national success to their club, Whittlebury Park, with victory in the Australian Spoons.
They won the final of English Ladies’ Golf Association’s stableford foursomes competition for bronze division handicap golfers at Brokenhurst Manor, Hampshire.
Ada, the ladies’ captain, and Jo, the wife of the club captain, represented ELGA’s Midland division in the final and took on pairs from the South Western, South Eastern and Northern divisions.
“Jo and I are utterly thrilled,” said Ada. “It’s the first time anyone from our club has got to the final of a national competition – and it goes without saying it’s the first time anyone has won!
“I had a committee meeting the other evening and was told not to come back without the Australian Spoons. I am very pleased to be able to deliver!”
The trophy, of a pair of spoons, was presented in 1966 by the Australian Ladies’ Golf Union.
Ada added: “We enjoyed the format and the company of our fellow competitors and highly recommend the Australian Spoons to all clubs to enter.
“The entire ELGA team did a great job in looking after us and making us feel special and the Brokenhurst ladies were superb, giving us such a warm welcome.”
Ada plays off 28 while Jo, who has been playing golf for only four years, is a 32-handicapper. The pair’s winning score was 24 points. The runners-up were: Wendy Quant and Liz Walker from Bridport and West Dorset in the South-Western division.
They were followed by Linda Paulson and Wendy Thurner from Clandon Regis, Surrey, in the South-Eastern division; and by Mary Gomersall and Margaret King of Cleckheaton and District, Yorkshire, in the Northern division.
