VALERIE MELVIN WINS RICCARTON
ROSEBOWL WITH A 69 AFTER RAIN
WASHES OUT SECOND ROUND

Florida-based Valerie Melvin, beaten by Catriona Matthew in the final of the 1994 Scottish women’s amateur championship at Gullane, won the rain-shortened Riccarton Rosebowl SLGA Order of Merit tournament at Hamilton Golf Club today (Sunday).
Valerie, who finished joint runner-up in the recent British women’s open amateur championship, had very good first round of three-under-par 69 before the rain set in and washing out the second round.
Valerie, picture right by courtesy of Tom Ward, was declared the winner of the trophy over 18 holes by one shot from Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder), who has something in common with Miss Melvin – she too has lost in the final of a “Scottish,” this year’s event at Barassie where she was beaten by Jenna Wilson.
Emily had a 70 – two ahead of Fiona Norris, former GB&I team manager and a member of the Hamilton club.
Jenna Wilson, winner of the recent Mackie Bowl at Gullane for the second year in a row, just managed to obtain fourth place ahead of Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle). Both players returned a 73. Jenna had the better last nine.
Scratch player Emily Ogilvy had the best net return of 70 on a countback against Valerie Melvin, who plays off +1 at Reunion Golf Club, Florida. Emily had the better inward half.
There were actually three players with net 70s, the third being young Ashleigh Wilson, who plays off four at Ladybank. Valerie had a better inward half than four-handicapper Ashleigh who did win the first junior prize
