AND KELSEY THROUGH TO
LAST 16 at SOUTHERDOWN
Four Scots have won their way through to the last 16 of the British girls' open amateur golf championship at Southerndown Golf Club, South Wales.
Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry), Carly Booth (Comrie), Roseanne Niven (Crieff) and Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) all won twice today but Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) lost in the first round.
Watson, beaten finalist last year in this championship and the No 1 seed this week, beat Harriet Owers-Bradley (Wollaton Park) by 4 and 2 and then had a very good 5 and 4 win over the highly-rated Spanish teeanger Marta Silva).
Watson, 16, will now play another Spanish player, Ana Urchegui, whom she beat in the quarter-finals at Portstewart last year.
Carly Booth, 15, has earned herself a third-round meeting tomorrow morning with Henrietta Brockway (Yeovil), a very good player who won the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play in 2005.
Carly, today's action image above, courtesy of Tom Ward (copyright), stepped up on her qualifying form to beat eighth seed Nicola Dunn (Harrogate) 2 and 1 in the first round and then Germany's Laura Alexandra Stempfle 3 and 2 in the afternoon.
Roseanne Niven reduced the strong Spanish challenge by two with big wins over Begona Jauregui Garcia (6 and 4)by and Ana Fernandez de Mesa (5 and 4).
The Crieff player plays England's Charlie Douglass (Brocket Hall) for a place in the last eight.
There will be another Scotland v England clash at the bottom of the draw with No 2 seed Kelsey MacDonald playing Kelly Tidy (Manchester). Kelsey beat Spain's Amanda Goyos Ball by 3 and 2 before winning a tight tussle 2 and 1 against Emelie Alonso, rated one of France's best female prospects.
