Another great day for Scotland at Southerndown
SALLY AND KELSEY HEAD
BRITISH GIRLS' QUALIFIERS,
SCOTS TAKE TEAM TITLE
Following last week's repeat triumph in the girls' home internationals over the same course, it was another great day for the Scots in the second qualifying round of the British girls' open amateur golf championship at Southerndown Golf Club, South Wales today.
South Queensferry 16-year-old Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry Ladies), who made it to the final 12 months ago, led the 64 qualifiers into the match-play stages with two par-matching rounds of 72 for 144.
And the No 2 seed in the draw is 16-year-old Kelsey MacDonald from Nairn Dunbar. She scored 75 and 70 - four birdies on the way home - for 145.
Three other Scots also qualified - Roseanne Niven (Crieff) with a 75 for 148, Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) with a 78 for 151, and Carly Booth from Comrie also survived with a 77 for 157.
Roseanne had a triple bogey 7 at the 11th but came storming back with birdies at the 12th, 13th, 15th and 18th.
Carly, 15, improved by three shots on her opening effort but she is still not on song. She had back to back birdies from the 12th to the 14th but eight bogeys either side of that purple patch. She was only one stroke away from figuring in the play-off on 158 for the last few of the 64 places in the match-play draw.
