Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release

FAVOURITES CO. LOUTH PROGRESS TO SEMI-FINALS

Favourites Co. Louth will join Royal Portrush, Laytown & Bettystown and Ennis in the semi-finals of the 2007 Suzuki Senior Cup following their quarter-final victories over Roscommon, Kilkenny, Carlow and Galway respectively at Milltown Golf Club today.
Co. Louth’s current international Deirdre Smith struck the first blow for the Eastern Champions with a 7&6 victory over Roscommon’s Mary Seymour before Ruth Lennon beat Patricia Nannery to level the tie. Sensationally, three matches went to extra holes in which Co. Louth’s Jennifer Gannon and Carla Reynolds emerged victorious on the 21st and 23rd.
Royal Portrush’s Gemma Hegarty led the way in their tie with Kilkenny with a 2&1 victory over past Irish Champion Eileen Rose Power.
Mary Dowling beat Lisa McMeekin to level the tie but the experienced tail of Helen Jones, Roma English and Girls International Lucy Simpson clinched victories to end the hopes of the Midland side.
Laytown & Bettystown’s Alyson Taylor beat Carlow Girls International Aedin Murphy in their top match clash that ended on the home green. Madeline Brennan and Carmel Roche fought gallantly for Carlow but in spite of being ahead, their matches were called-in when past internationals Tracy Eakin and Phil O’Gorman claimed victories to book Laytown/Bettystown’s place in the semi-finals.
Despite losing their opening tie to Galway’s Girls International Sarah Faller, the tail-end of Girls International Sarah Cunningham, Valerie Hassett and Ciara Pender dug deep to ensure Southern Champions Ennis made it through to complete the semi-final line-up. For debutante Western Champions Galway, a semi-final place was just one step too many while the return of double-Irish Champion Tricia McDonnell for tomorrow’s semi-final will bring welcome relief for Ennis.
The Draw for tomorrow’s 8am semi-final pairings, which sees Laytown & Bettystown as the first back-door side to make the final four, takes place this evening at the Gala Tournament Dinner.
