Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release
2007 AA INSURANCE LADIES GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
NORTHERN DISTRICT FINALS
at KNOCK GOLF CLUB
Belvoir Park, City of Derry, Rockmount and Gracehill will join Larne and Omagh at the All-Ireland semi-finals of the AA Insurance Championships at Athlone Golf Club on September 28 to 30.
Belvoir Park started brightly in the Junior Cup and held a slight advantage over a luckless Donaghadee on the outward stretch. Gail Linter and Pauline Bailie closed out their matches on the home green and when Jenny Gibson holed from two feet on seventeen, her victory secured the Northern District title for the club.
In spite of losing the top match, City of Derry reeled off the remaining four matches to beat Cushendal in the final of the Intermediate Cup. Veronica Burke held firm to close out Brenda Carey on the home green while Team Captain Ciara Quigg led by example winning her epic encounter at the second tie hole.
City of Derry’s Eileen Moyne had a double reason to celebrate as she holed out on the par 3 sixteenth.
The Minor Cup saw Rockmount come from behind to win the 3 back matches and beat Moyola Park by the odd match. Andrea Patterson and Carol McGrath both won on sixteen while Grace Downey won the decider on the home green.
Kirkistown’s Castle’s run in the AA Insurance Championships came to an end with a 3½-1½ loss to Gracehill. While Henrietta Taylor drew first blood, Gracehill’s Vee Stockley, Gloria Stewart, and Anne McCarroll reeled off convincing victories to lift this year’s Challenge Cup.
The four District Champions now join Senior Foursomes winners Larne and Junior Foursomes winners Omagh, who dispatched Shandon Park and Edenmore in two tight encounters on Saturday, in the All-Ireland semi-finals in Athlone, September 28 to 30.
