Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release
IRELAND LEAD GREAT BRITAIN WITH 18 HOLES
TO PLAY IN WORLD UNIVERSITY GOLF
The Irish team of Niamh Kitching (Claremorris), Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co. Down) and Gillian O’Leary (Cork) overtook nearest rivals Great Britain to lead by eight shots with just 18 holes remaining at the World University Games' women's golf championship at Water Golf & Gardens, Thailand today.
Under the midday sun, McVeigh fired the best round of tournament so far, a marvelous three under par 69 and now takes complete control of the individual scoring – a full seven shots clear of nearest challenger Anna Scott (Great Britain) who added a 73 to her tally.
University of Limerick student Kitching carded a four over par 76 around the 72 par Watermills course while University College Cork's Gillian O'Leary finally found form, firing three birdies in her ever-improving 78.
With two scores to count from each day, Ireland now look odds on favourites to clinch the Team Trophy with just one round remaining on Friday.
A big day also awaits McVeigh who, at level par and with a comfortable seven shot lead, must now feel the Individual Gold Medal is within touching distance.
