English Ladies Golf Association Press Release
ALEX PETERS LEADS BY FIVE IN NORTH OF
ENGLAND U-16 GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP
Nottinghamshire’s Alex Peters holds a five-shot lead in the girls’ section of the North of England Under-16 championship – and is challenging for the overall crown at Heswall Golf Club.
The 13-year-old from Notts’ Ladies is two-under par after scoring 71, 75 in the first two rounds. As well as leading both the girls’ Under-14 and Under16 events she is just three shots off the championship pace, set by the leading boy.
Alex plays in ELGA’s Select Midlands squad and is the Midland ladies’ champion.
“It’s fantastic to have someone so high up the leaderboard,” said Pat Smillie, the national junior coach for the English Ladies’ Golf Association.
Altogether five ELGA squad members have qualified for the final 36 holes of the championship. A total of 45 players have made the cut and only nine of them are girls.
England girl international Kelly Tidy (Manchester) recovered well from a nine on her first hole to return a four-over 78 and claim her place. “She showed great character to keep it together,” said Pat.
Also through are English Under-13 champion Hannah Turland (Tidworth Garrison), English Under-15 champion Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) and Yorkshire’s Helen Searle (West End).
Kent’s Sian Evans missed out by just one shot while Dorset’s Hayley Davis also missed the cut but was the only squad member to improve her score in the second round, which was played in very blustery conditions.
Squad scores:
146 Alex Peters (Notts Ladies) 71 75.
156 Kelly Tidy (Manchester) 78 78.
158 Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) 79 79, Helen Searle (West End) 79 79, Hannah Turland (Tidworth Garrison) 79 79.
160 Sian Evans (Faversham) 80 80.
163 Hayley Davis (Ferndown) 83 80.
