English Ladies Golf Association Press Release

ENGLAND UNDER-16 GIRLS SHARE HONOURS

WITH SPAIN AT HESWALL
England’s girls halved 3-3 with Spain in the annual Under-16 international at Heswall, thanks to winning play from English Under-15 champion Heidi Baek and Midland ladies’ champion Alex Peters. They contributed to an overall England victory, with the combined girls’ and boys’ team beating their Spanish counterparts 8½-3½.
Meanwhile the two other members of the girls’ team, Sian Evans (Faversham) and Helen Searle (West End) both put on a sub-par singles display.
“It’s been a brilliant day,” said girls’ team captain Nikki Timmins. “The girls have been excellent and they’ve all played out of their skin.”
Heidi (Felixstowe Ferry) and Alex (Notts’ Ladies) scored their first point with a 4 and 2 win in the morning foursomes and carried that form into the singles.
Heidi, 13, demonstrated a sharp short game on her way to a 5 and 4 win. Alex, also 13, started with an eagle on the first and simply refused to allow her opponent into the match as she cruised to a 9 and 8 win. The only halved hole was the third where both girls chipped in for birdies.
Sian Evans, 15, and Helen Searle, 14, bounced back from a disappointing 6 and 5 foursomes defeat with good golf. “They both played very well in the afternoon and both were under par – but they came up against some tough opposition,” said Nikki.
Sian lost 5 and 3 when her opponent pitched in for an eagle 3 while Helen lost 4 and 2.
The England boys were: Adam Carson (Long Ashton), Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall), Tom Lewis (Mid Herts) and Chris Lloyd (the Kendleshire).
The match is the curtain raiser to the North of England Under-16s championship on the Cheshire course.
