CLAIRE AITKEN v JENNY PEASE FOR
ENGLISH MID-AMATEUR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Kent’s Claire Aitken will meet Jenny Pease of Essex in the final of the English women's open mid-amateur championship at Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire.
Claire, 21, won her place when she defeated Sian James of Bristol & Clifton 3 and 2 in their semi-final. Jenny, also 21, beat Becky Dowell (Enmore Park) 2 and 1.
It will be a first national final for both players and their reaction was similar. “I’m excited – and a little bit nervous,” said Jenny, who plays at Braintree and is the Essex champion.
“I’m excited – and looking forward to it,” said Claire, who has already won four prestigious scratch titles this season. She had the upper hand throughout her semi-final but Sian, who struggled with her driving, kept coming back thanks to some fine putting.
However, Claire (The London) played steadily and never gave up her advantage. She was two up at the turn, lost the 10th, but went back to two up after 14. She claimed her place in the final when she won the 16th with a par.
Earlier in the day Claire, who works at a driving range, beat Nottinghamshire champion Emma Sheffield by one hole in their quarter final.
Jenny Pease won the first hole of her semi-final and was never to fall behind. She appeared to be cruising to victory when she won the eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th , with two birdies and two pars, to go to four up. But Becky Dowell staged a spirited fightback with wins on the 12th and 15th.
“Becky came back at me but I holed two good putts on the last two greens for halves,” said Jenny, who works in a pro shop.
Jenny has played golf since she was 11 but took up the game seriously only about three years ago when injury forced her to give up hockey. She played both for Essex and the East of England and had hoped for an international career.
She reached the semi-final by winning an all-Essex tie against Fiona Smith of Chelmsford.
