SALLY WINS HER FIRST MATCH IN US GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP
Sally Watson, the No 6 qualifier, was two under par in winning her opening match by 2 and 1 in the United States girls' junior championship at Tacoma Country & Golf Club, Lakewood in Washington State.
The 16-year-old from South Queensferry beat Karis Akin from Kentucky, who had qualified on the limit mark, with the help of an eagle 3 at the par-5 16th. The virtually clinched victory for the Scot who had been either square or one down through the first 10 holes.
Sally went ahead to stead with a par 5 at the 11th where her opponent took 7.
A series of halves was ended with Sally's eagle 3 at the 16th. A half in par at the next ended the contest and put Sally through to the last 32. Twelve months ago she made it through to the last 16.
Her opponent in the second round is the No 26 qualifier Tiffany Lua (California) who was also two under par in winning her first round tie by 3 and 2 against Cyd Okino from Hawaii.
