KERRI DANCING AFTER LEADING NORTH

OF SCOTLAND MATCH-PLAY QUALIFIERS

Last year’s beaten finalist Kerri Harper from Inverness shot a great six-under-par round of 70 to lead by four strokes the 16 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the North of Scotland women’s amateur championship at Lossiemouth today.
It’s been a good season for Kerri (pictured right) – Scottish universities women’s champion over the same course in the spring before capturing the club championships at Inverness and Nairn golf clubs.

To win the North of Scotland title for the first time and perhaps avenge last year’s 4 and 3 defeat by Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) in the final at Montrose Links is well within Miss Harper’s scope, judging by her qualifying round form.
She birdied the third, seventh, eighth, 10th, 12th 14th and 16th with only one bogey, at the fourth in halves of 36 (two under par) and 34 (four under par) for the Moray club’s Old Course.
A repeat Harper v Thomson final is a possibility because Michele, title-winner for the past two years, earned the No 2 seeding, which puts her in the opposite half of the match-play draw. Her two-under 74 included a triple bogey 7 at the 12th where she required two shots to get out of a greenside bunker.
Michele, who now has +1 of a handicap, had six birdies in halves of 35 and 39.
Match-play golf, of course, has a habit of not quite working out the way it should on paper and there are some other qualifiers capable of upsetting the form book.
Three of them were on the 75 mark on a thundery day when only the early starters got round dry – Emma Ogilvy (Muckhart), who reached the final of the Scottish women’s amateur championship at Barassie in May, Laura Murray (Alford), joint runner-up in the Scottish Under-21 girls championship at Auchterarder last Friday, and Aberdeenshire county team-mate Carol Wilson (Murcar Links) who birdied four of the first eight holes.
