Jane makes it three in a row

Cara Easton and Jane Turner after the prizegiving

Jane Turner wins East of Scotland Girls Championship

Jane Turner of the host club, Mortonhall, won the East of Scotland Girls Championship for the third time in succession this afternoon, when she beat a gallant Cara Easton (Dalmahoy) by 6&5 in an exciting final.

Don't let the scoreline fool you into thinking that it was a one-sided contest as 14 year old Cara was out in a creditable two over par 39 and six down to a barrage of birdies from her 18 year old opponent. Jane had five birdies in an outward half of four under par 33. They halved the 10th in par 3's and then Cara won the 11th after an uncharacteristic four-from-the-edge from Jane. Jane reduced the 433 yard par 5 12th to a drive and short iron for her 6th birdie and a return to six up, and a half at the 13th gave Jane the East of Scotland title.

In the morning semifinals, Jane beat Susan Jackson (Ladybank) by 5&3, and Cara beat 14-year-old Gabrielle Macdonald (Prestonfield) by 4&3

This is the first time that anyone has won the 30-year-old Championship trophy, donated by Marjory Ferguson, three times in succession. There are many illustrious names including Jane Connachan, Catriona Lambert, Hilary Monaghan, Lesley Nicholson, Vikki Laing, Lynn Kenny and Louise Kenney on the plinth.
Next year Jane will be too old to compete, so the scene is set for a new name on the trophy.
