YOUNG SHIRE TEAM NOW GO FORWARD TO
SCOTTISH FINALS AS NORTH CHAMPIONS
Aberdeenshire completed a clean sweep of victories in the North Division women’s inter-county team golf championship at Cruden Bay today by beating Angus 6 ½ -2 ½ in cold, windy and sometimes wet weather more akin to a winter’s day than the end of June.
In the other closing match in the three-day schedule, Northern Counties found their form to score their first win by 8-1 over defending champions Perth & Kinross. Northern Counties, who were officially placed second on games-won, were handicapped by the loss of Donna MacLeod with a back injury on Saturday morning.
Having beaten Perth & Kinross 6-3 on Saturday and Northern Counties 7-2 on Sunday, Aberdeenshire, captained by Ros Dunsmuir, go forward with rising confidence to play Scotland’s three other regional title-winners in the county finals at Tulliallan Golf Club at the end of August.
It’s been five years – at Glenisla GC in 2002 – since Shire won the North Division title but they may be in for a more successful period. The winning team at Cruden Bay contained five players who have graduated from the county’s competitive girls’ programme.
Most successful player of the tournament was Aberdeenshire’s Laura Murray (Alford) with six wins out of six. She was closely followed by team-mate Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) with 5 ½ pt. Sara Thomson (Murcar Links) marked her county team debut with gaining 3pt out of three.
Kerri Harper (Inverness) was best for Northern Counties with 4pt out of six. Dawn Dewar top-scored for Angus with 4pt out of six and Emily Ogilvy gained 3pt for Perth & Kinross.
