SCOTS LYING EIGHTH OF 14 AT END OF FIRST
DAY IN WORLD BOYS’ TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Scotland were joint eighth in the field of 14 at the end of the first round of the Toyota world boys’ team golf championship over the Chukyo Golf Club’s Ishino course (6,886yd, par 71).
Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) was the only one of the four Scots teenagers to break par with a fine round of 67, joint second best among the 56 boys competing.
New Scottish boys’ match-play champion Paul Ferrier (Baberton) had a 72.
The third counting score for the Scots came from Banchory’s James Byrne with a 73.
Only the three best scores within a team count in each round. Shaun McAllister (Craigielaw) had the non-counting scores of 74.
Scotland’s team total on Day 1 was one-under-par 212.
Norway won the title last year, beating Sweden in the final. The same two countries head the first day standings 12 months later, with Sweden (12-under-par 201) setting the pace from Norway (205) with Japan third on 207.
Sweden were boosted by the lowest individual score of the day, a six-under-par 65 from Jesper Kennegard. All three counting Swedish scores were in the 60s.
United States, expected to be among the front-runners, are back in a tie for 11th place with a first-day team score of 216.
