TOUGH FOR SCOTS IN "BRITISH" AT LEEDS

There are 15 Scots in the capacity field of 144 for the British women's open amateur golf championship which tees off with the first of two qualifying rounds at Alwoodley Golf Club, near Leeds tomorrow (TUESDAY).
They are:
Sara Bishop (Cochrane Castle), Carly Booth (Comrie), Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), Louise Kenney(Pitreavie), Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), Rachel Livingstone (Musselburgh Old), Heather MacRae (Dunblane New), Laura Murray (Alford), Roseanne Niven (Crieff), Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder), Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon), Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry),Gemma Webster (Hilton Park), Jenna Wilson (Strathaven).
Last year, the only Scot to reach the last 16 at Royal County Down was Krystle Caithness - and such is the strength in depth of the international entry once again, that any Scot who wins their way through to the quarter-finals will have played well.
The last Scot to win the British title was Alison Rose after an all-Scottish final against Mhairi McKay at Cruden Bay in 1997. Before that Catriona Lambert took the title in 1993. Although Scotland has a very good crop of teenagers coming through, it may be a year or two before they are ready to rival the achievements of Alison, Mhairi and Catriona.
Spain's Belen Mozo, who won two British open titles (girls and women) and the European individual amateur championship, is not defending this week at Alwoodley. A student at the University of Southern California, Belen has stayed on in the States to compete in a pre-qualifying tournament this week for the United States Women's Open.
Derby 19-year-old Melissa Reid, winner of the Scottish women's open stroke-play at Troon and the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews a couple of weeks ago, is the main British hope of repelling the Continentals.
The lowest handicap player in the field is Spanish 17-year-old Carolota Ciganda who has a rating of +4.8. Even after she won the British crown at Royal County Down 12 months ago, Belen Mozo said that winning the title did not make her a better player that Carlota. "She is the best Spanish player, better than me," said Belen - which perhaps explains why she is competing in America this week rather than taking on her compatriot at Leeds.
