Ladies British open amateur championship

LOUISE KENNY GIVES THE SCOTS A LEAD
WITH A PAR-MATCHING 72 AT ALWOODLEY

Trainee primary school teacher Louise Kenney gave the 14 other Scots in the field for the Ladies’ British open amateur golf championship a lesson in how to match the par of 72 in the first qualifying round over the testing LGU course at Alwoodley Golf Club, near Leeds today.
Louise, a former Scotland cap for whom golf is no longer a priority, had a dream start – an eagle 2 at the 393yd first. The euphoria with bogeys at the second, fourth and fifth but she was able to equal the par of 37 to the turn with the help of a birdie 4 at the long fourth.
Bogeys at the 10th and 12th knocked her back a bit but the Pitreavie player got her game back in the groove to birdie the 13th and the long 16th for a commendable par 72.
Until Louise came in late in a field of 144, who will be reduced to 64 for the match-play stages after Wednesday’s second qualifying round, it was Carly Booth who had the honour of leading the Tartan Army.
The 14-year-old outstanding prospect from Comrie, Perthshire – she will be 15 later this month – “escaped” with a two-over-par 74 over a picturesque lay-out where the heather and long grass that borders most of the fairways makes it a “drive-straight-or-you’re-dead” course.
“I could have had a 13 or something at the 17th hole,” said Carly. “I played two provisional balls off the tee because I wasn’t sure I would find my first drive in the woods … and I snap-hooked both of them out of bounds.”
That meant she had to find her first ball off the tee or face taking a double-figure score at the hole.
“I was lucky I did. It was a terrible lie, right up against a tree trunk, but I found it and that was the main thing. I could only move the ball forward a few feet because of my restricted swing and I finished up with a double-bogey 6. But, like I say, it could have been at least double that.”
Earlier Miss Booth had birdied the second, fourth, sixth, ninth and 16th but dropped shots at the third, eighth, 10th, 14th and 15th apart from the double-bogey at the 17th in halves of 35 (two under par) and 39 (four over par).
“I wish I could go out and play the second nine holes again. I had the chance of a good score after going out in two-under-par,” said perfectionist Carly.
Next best returns from the Scots were 76s from Scottish champion Jenna Wilson (Strathaven), Heather MacRae (Dunblane New), Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) and Laura Murray (Alford).
Sally Watson (David Leadbetter Golf Academy) had a 77 and then came Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), Roseanne Niven (Crieff) and Sara Bishop (Cochrane Castle) on 78 – two ahead of three times Scottish title-holder Anne Laing (Vale of Leven).
Gemma Webster (Hilton Park) had an 81 as did Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old).
Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder), beaten finalist in the “Scottish” recently at Barassie, had a disappointing 82. She never got going after bogeying the first and running up a double bogey 6 at the second. She finished in 82 after an outward half of 42. She also had a double bogey 6 at the 13th.
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) had a sad 90 in which she required 49 shots – 14 over par – for the second nine holes.
Sharing the lead on two-under-par 70 are two teenagers, Carlota Ciganda (Spain) – unhappy that her handicap of +4.8 has come down to +4.6 since she entered the championship a few weeks ago – and Dutch girl Christel Boeljohn, as well as Parisienne Valentine Derrey who will be 21 on Wednesday.
At the end of the long first day, there were 64 players with scores of 77 or better.
