AYRSHIRE WIN SCOTTISH BOYS' AREA TEAM
CHAMPIONSHIP AT FORRES
Ayrshire’s Michael Stewart, Cameron Gray, David Currie and Euan Brown won the Scottish Golf Union boys’ area team championship at Forres Golf Club today for only the second time in the tournament’s 30-year history.
The previous Ayrshire triumph came at Cowglen in 1998.
Ayrshire totalled 339, two strokes ahead of the favourites and seven-times winners Lothians 341. North took third place on 353.
The Ayrshire quartet were five strokes behind lunchtime leaders Lothians after the morning foursomes but made up the leeway with some brilliant individual scoring in the singles.
Cameron Gray won the Niagara Cup for the lowest score on the day – a 65 – and he was only one shot ahead of Michael Stewart. Euan Brown had the third counting score of 67.
The Ayrshire singles total (best three from four scores to count) of 198 was seven strokes better than that achieved by Lothians’ Paul Ferrier, Myles Cunningham, Neil Henderson and Oliver Huish. Ferrier, winner of the Scottish boys’ match-play championship at Dunbar a few weeks ago, did have a 66, the joint second best score of the day alongside Ayrshire’s Michael Stewart.
