Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release

TARA DELANEY HEADS QUALIFIERS FOR IRISH
WOMEN'S CLOSE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH-PLAY

Tara Delaney (Carlow), pictured right, led the qualifiers at a blustery Lahinch in the Lancôme Irish Ladies’ Close Championship and faces a tricky assignment against the experienced Charlotte Crowe (Tipperary) when the match-play stages get underway on Monday morning.
As Saturday’s gales abated, Tara, a Kent State University, Ohio student, was in devastating form, birdieng 1, 5, 8 and 9 to turn two under par. Further birdies at 12, 14 and 15 saw her complete her four under par best-of-the-day 70.

Holli Snelling (Killarney) had a double celebration when she followed her eagle at the first with a hole in one at the 133 yard 11th hole. Her six-iron found the bottom of the cup on her way to a comfortable 81.

Elsewhere, defending champion Tricia (Mangan) McDonnell from Ennis safely made it through with a resounding 76 while Maura Morrin (The Curragh) added a 79 to ease her qualification worries. Overnight leader Sinead O’Sullivan (Galway) followed her sensational 74 with an equally impressive 77 to qualify second.
Darragh McGowan (Ballybofey/Stranorlar) proved the most unlucky competitor when she was the only player to lose out in the five-way play-off for the last four places.
Some interesting pairings on Monday. McDonnell plays Gemma Hegarty (Greencastle) while Lisa Maguire has a tricky assignment with girls international Vicki Power (Dundalk) while sister Leona plays Karen Delaney (Carlow).

The battle of past champions sees Donabate’s Mary McKenna pitted against Eileen Rose Power (Kilkenny).

The Championship runs Monday through Wednesday while those in positions 33 through 48 play for the Ita Wallace Trophy.
