BRITAIN MARCH CLOSER TO COMMONWEALTH
TITLE BY BEATING NZ IN SOUTH AFRICA

Britain continued their march towards a first Commonwealth Tournament triumph since 1991 when they beat New Zealand 6 1/2-1/2 to maintain their 100 per cent record at the end of the third day of the women's amateur international team event, played every four years, at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club today (Wednesday).
Britain took the foursomes 1 1/2-1/2 and then the singles 5-0.
Krystle Caithness from Cellardyke, Fife, the only Scot in the six-strong British team, won her singles by 4 and 3 against Yeon Song Kim.
South Africa beat Canada 4 1/2-2 1/2 in the other match.
Britain, topping the all-play-all league table with three wins out of three, have a rest day on Thursday before coming back into action in the final programme on Friday when they play the host nation, South Africa.
Reluctant to single out any of her players, Britain's team captain Sue Turner was clearly impressed with her team's performance. "We don't rely on individuals as we play as a complete team. We may be top of the log but we believe we still have a long way to go."
In actual fact, it is difficult to see Britain failing now. South Africa would need to beat New Zealand on Thursday and the Brits on Friday to equal the table leaders' 3pt tally. Australia need to beat Canada and then New Zealand to finish on 3pt. If it came down to a games-won countback, then Britain's 7-0 whitewash of Canada on the opening day would stand them in good stead.
