HANNAH’S BEST YET IN STATES
– THIRD IN BETSY RAWLS
LONGHORN INVITATIONAL

England girl international Hannah Burke – she will be 19 on March 28 – has achieved her highest finish so far in her freshman year at Baylor University, Texas.
Hannah, pictured right, who comes from Welwyn Garden City and is a member of Mid-Herts Golf Club, had three very steady rounds of 74, 73 and 73 to finish third on four-over-par 220 in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational women’s college tournament over the University of Texas Golf Club course of 6,290yd, par-72, at Austin.
But for a couple of double bogeys – at the very first hole in the first round and again at the fourth in her final round – Hannah would have gone close to matching the total of the winner, Maria Hernandez, the Spanish Vagliano Trophy player from Pamplona and a student at Purdue University in Indiana.
Maria, 21 on March 24, scored 77, 70 and 70 – firing 10 birdies in all – for a one-over-par total of 217.
Stacy Lewis (Arkansas) was runner-up on 218 with scores of 76, 72 and 70. Stacy had two double bogeys in her first round.
American Kelley Lough (Texas), the overnight leader, slumped after a 69 and a 71 to a final round of 81 for a total of 221. She had no birdies but nine bogeys in her soul-destroying final round.
Sian Reddick from Folkestone, the 2004 English women’s and Under-21 stroke-play champion and a Baylor team-mate of Hannah Burke, continues to struggle. She broke a toe during the first half of the US college golf season and has been nursing a back injury in the second half.
Not surprisingly, Miss Reddick had scores of 84, 80 and 82 to finish 69th on 246.
Hannah Burke’s effort helped Baylor (921) to finish third of 15 in the team title chase behind Purdue (907) and Texas Christian.
