KATE O'SULLIVAN PEAKS IN STATES

KATE HITS THE HIGH POINTS
IN NORTH CAROLINA

Paisley exile Kate O’Sullivan, pictured left, lived up to the name of her American university – High Point in North Carolina – with a fourth place finish on level par 144 in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament at Waynesville County Club in North Carolina.
Kate, starting her final college year in America, had rounds of 74 and 70. The second round, which included two birdies and an eagle, was her lowest ever score in any competition either in the States or back home in Scotland.
It was also her lowest ever 36-hole total and her fifth top-five finish in the United States.
Julie Streng, the High Point University women’s head golf coach, said: “I was very proud of Kate’s performance. This is probably the best she has ever played and to do it in such a field of talented individuals is really something.”
Kate finished four shots behind the winner Staci Lynch (Austin Peay State College) who shot 71 and 69 for 140 over the par-72, 5,915yd course.
Also in the field were Lucy Gould, the Welsh girls champion of 2002 and 2003, and two players from Ireland – Sinead O’Sullivan, a freshman from Galway, and AnnMarie Dalton from Carlow.
Lucy and Sinead are students at East Tennessee State University. Lucy from Bargoed had rounds of 71 and 76 for 147 and a share of 10th place. Sinead scored 72 and 77 for joint 14th place on 149.
AnnMarie Dalton (High Point) had rounds of 83 and 76 for 159 and joint 76th place.
Despite the efforts of Lucy and Sinead, East Tennessee State, the overnight leaders, were pipped by one shot (586-587) for the team title by the host college, Western Carolina.
High Point, with nobody to give Kate O’Sullivan strong support, finished 16th of the 23 competing teams on 622.
