WORLD UNIVERSITIES CHAMPIONSHIPS

SCOTS SIXTH AND SEVENTH IN
FINAL INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS

Gordon Yates (Stirling University) finished joint sixth and Dunblane’s Heather MacRae (San Diego State University) seventh in the individual men’s and women’s standings at the world university golf championships at Circolo Golf Torino in Italy today (Saturday).
Great Britain came third and Ireland fifth behind Japan and United States in the men’s team event while the GB women finished seventh and Ireland ninth behind winners United States in the women’s team championship.
Yates started the 72-hole tournament as one of the leaders but followed up a 67 and a 69 with 72 and 73 for a seven-under-par total of 281 – eight shots behind Japan’s Yuta Ideda and Taipei’s Chen-Chih Chiang who both totalled 15-under 273.
Daniel Willett from Sheffield and Jacksonville State University finished joint fourth with Ireland’s Aengus McAllister on 280.
The two other members of the GB men’s team, Jason Palmer and Ed Parker, both from the University of Birmingham, were unable to come anywhere matching the efforts of team-mates Willett and Yates, otherwise Great Britain would have at least finished runners-up.
Unlike Yates, Curtis Cup reserve Heather MacRae started slowly with a pair of 76s but finished strongly with a 73 and 70 for seven-over-par 295 – nine shots behind the winner, American Stacy Lewis from the University of Arkansas.
Catherine Tucker was the top Irish competitor in 24th place on 311.
Heather’s team-mates, Faye Sanderson (Northumbria University) and Olivia Briggs (Stirling) were not able to lend much support to the Scot in the team event. Sanderson finished 28th on 315 and Briggs joint 35th on 324.
