SCOTTISH VETS' CHAMPIONSHIP

INSPIRED PUTTING WINS VETS' TITLE
FOR KATHLEEN SUTHERLAND

North area over-50s title-holder Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) produce an inspired spell of putting to win the Scottish veteran women’s championship over the Lansdowne course at sunny Blairgowrie today (Monday).
Kathleen beat Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) by 4 and 3 in the final after holing single putts on the last five greens, two of them for birdies, at the 12th and 14th.
“I wish I could putt like that every day,” said Kathleen who holed from 6ft at the 11th, 15ft at the 12th, 4ft at the 13th, 25ft at the 14th and 8ft after being bunkered at the 15th.
It has to be said the rest of Miss Sutherland’s game was very good as well, particularly her iron play.
Noreen Fenton won the second hole but lost the fourth and fifth to fall one down. After a string of halved holes in a tight contest, Kathleen went through the back of the 10th to lose that hole and be pulled back to all square.
Then Miss Sutherland’s putting magic started on the 11th and she surged into a four-hole lead before halving the 15th for the match.
Both finalists grew up in Montrose and learned their golf there.
Both were members of the title-winning Scotland team in the Veteran Ladies Golf Association's area championship at Formby. Noreen is also in the SLGA-selected Scotland team for the senior women's home internationals at Hamilton next week but Kathleen is a reserve.

Today's results:
Semi-finals – N Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) bt L Campbell (Torwoodlee) 5 and 3, K Sutherland (Royal Montrose) bt H Faulds (Douglas Park) 2 and 1.
Final – Sutherland bt Fenton 4 and 3.
