SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN UPDATE
PAMELA HOMES IN ON SCOTTISH SENIOR
MATCH-PLAY FINAL AT MACHRIHANISH
Title-holder Pamela Williamson is determined not to make the long journey home from Machrihanish to Edinburgh without a trophy to show for four days’ competitive play.
On Friday, Mrs Williamson lost her Scottish senior women’s amateur stroke-play title over the Kintyre links but she is through to the last four of the over-50s’ national match-play championship at the same venue.
Baberton member Pamela pulled off the double whammy at Grantown on Spey last year but one from two is the best she can now achieve. She was in impressive form in the morning's wet conditions with a 8 and 7 win over Ann Smart (Banchory) followed by a 6 and 5 victory over Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park) in the afternoon sunshine.
Pamela now plays Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) on Sunday morning for a place in the 18-hole final. Helen won her quarter-final against Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) by two holes.
The other semi-final is between Liz Campbell (Torwoodlee) and St Andrews hotel proprietor Fiona De Vries (St Rule) who prevented Moira Thomson (North Berwick) reaching the match-play final for the second year in a row. Fiona won by 2 and 1.
Top seed Ruth Brown (Lothianburn), winner of the 36-hole stroke-play section of the championship on Friday, was tumbled out of the match-play in the first round. She was beaten 2 and 1 by the last of the 16 qualifiers, Susan McGregor (Edzell).
The No 2 seed, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), was also sent packing early. She went out at the 19th to the No 15 qualifier, Karen Ballantyne.
And to complete an unhappy morning in the rain for the leading qualifiers for the match-play, No 3 seed Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay) was knocked out by Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle). Jennifer won by 5 and 4.
Saturday's results:
FIRST ROUND
S McGregor (Edzell) bt R Brown (Lothianburn) 2 and 1.
E Campbell (Torwoodlee) bt J Paterson (Drumpellier) 2 holes.
F De Vries (St Rule) bt A Telfer (Milngavie) 8 and 7.
