INTERNATIONAL COLLEGIATE

STIRLING’S GORDON BEATS STAR US
COLLEGE PLAYERS BY FIVE SHOTS

Stirling University’s Gordon Yates pulled off a great individual win in the 2nd International Collegiate Championship over the Torrance Course at St Andrews Bay today.
He shot rounds of 67, 68 and 68 for a 13-under-par total of 203 – five shots ahead of Dustin Johnson (Coastal Carolina).
Yates, a former Scotland boy and youth international, led the field recently in the Leven Gold Medal before subsiding to eighth place.
On a team level – and on the American college circuit – team performances count more than individual displays, Stirling University made a gallant bid to keep up with the “big boys” from America.
They eventually finished a creditable sixth of 10 teams, only four strokes behind the fourth-placed Texas Tech.
The Stirling team were lying second to North Carolina at the end of 18 holes and were still hanging on in the No 2 spot overnight.
But in Sunday’s final round, Stirling subsided to a team total of 294 – a big drop-off from their first two scores of 285 and 286. That gave Stirling a final team aggregate of 865 compared with title winners North Carolina’s 855.
Defending champions Wake Forest – they won over the same course when the International Collegiate was first place in 2002 – and Coastal Carolina came with a run on the last day.
Wake Forest got to within two shots of overhauling North Carolina but had to be content with the runner-up spot.
Coastal Carolina’s Sunday team score of 278 was the lowest achieved by any of the 10 teams over the two days and hoisted them up to third place on 858.
