STIRLING UP WITH THE BIG BOYS
FROM USA AT ST ANDREWS BAY
Stirling University did very well in the first round of the International Collegiate Championship to separate the “big boys” from America and be lying second in the 10-team contest.
North Carolina set the first-round pace with a team total of 279. Stirling came next with 85, just ahead of Coastal Carolina (286) and defending champions Wake Forest (287) – they won the first and only other staging of the event, also over the Torrance Course at St Andrews Bay, in 2002.
Gordon Yates (Stirling) and Robert Riesen (North Carolin) shared the individual first-round honours with five-under-par 67 apiece.
Gordon had halves of 32 and 35 while Robert reached the turn in a brilliant 30 strokes.
