NE DISTRICT MATCH-PLAY FINALISTS

TAYLOR v PHILLIPS FOR JAFFREY CUP

Reinstated amateur Glenn Taylor, a member at Meldrum House Golf Club, returned to the Newmachar club, where he was professional several years ago, to reach Tuesday night's final of the North-east District match-play championship for the Jaffrey Cup. It will tee off at 6pm.

Over the Hawkshill course, Taylor beat the cup-holder, Mark Halliday (Royal Aberdeen), by 3 and 2 with two-under-par figures.

Taylor won the first with a par and the second with a birdie but promptly lost the third and fourth and had to birdie the fifth to regain the lead which he doubled with a winning par at the sixth. Another Taylor birdie put him three up at the eighth but Halliday birdied the ninth to be two down at the turn.

Taylor parred the 12th to go three up again but lost the 15th to a birdie before clinching a 3 and 2 victory with a win at the 16th.

Glenn’s opponent in the final will be Laurie Phillips (Cruden Bay) who beat Steve Wheeler (Bon Accord) by two holes in the other semi-final.

Wheeler had the edge for most of the way but could not build up a big enough lead to hold off his opponent’s stronger finish.

Phillips wiped out a one-hole deficit at the 16th and then won both the 17th and 18th, finishing in the grand style with a birdie at the last.

Lawrie was approximately two or three under par for the round.

Results:

Semi-finals – G Taylor (Meldrum House) bt M Halliday (Royal Aberdeen) 3 and 2, L Phillips (Cruden Bay) bt S Wheeler (Bon Accord) 2 holes.
