CAMERON CORBETT VASE
THREE SHARE HALFWAY LEAD IN
CAMERON CORBETT VASE
Scottish champion Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie), Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) and Hilton Park’s Gordon Yates shared the lead on seven-under-par 137 at the halfway stage of the Cameron Corbett Vase open tournament at Haggs Castle on Saturday.
Campbell, who dashed down to Glasgow after failing to make the 36-hole cut in the Scottish Challenge at Murcar Links on Friday evening, must be thinking it was well worth the effort to defend the title he won 12 months ago.
Glenn had steady scores of 68 and 69.
Kevin McAlpine, son of the former Dundee United goalkeeper Hamish, has been playing for Colorado State University on the American college circuit for the past four years. He had a “so-so” first-round 73 and then really caught fire with an eight-under-par 64 in the second circuit.
Gordon Yates went the other way. He blazed the first-round trail with a 65 giving him a two-shot lead. Then he “subsided” to a par 72.
Former British amateur champion Craig Watson (East Renfrewshire) and John Gallagher (Swanston) are only one shot off the pace on 138. Gallagher has already won in Glasgow recently. He came from behind to win the Tennant Cup at Killermont.
Players with 36-hole tallies of 152 or better qualified for Sunday’s final two rounds at Haggs Castle.
