HOSTS RENFREWSHIRE SET FOR TITLE

Renfrewshire, the only team with two wins out of two, look set to clinch the West Division women’s inter-county team golf championship at East Renfrewshire Golf Club on Wednesday

Renfrewshire followed up their opening-day win over title-holders Lanarkshire with a 5-4, come-from-behind victory over Dunbartonshire & Argyll.

D&A looked set fair when they took the foursomes 2-1 and Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) won the top singles tie for them by beating Renfrewshire’s young champion, Megan Briggs.

But Renfrewshire clawed their way back from a 1-3 deficit with wins by Clare-Marie Carlton (over three times champion Anne Laing), Donna Jackson, Kate O’Sullivan, Lesley Robertson before Gemma Webster got D&A’s second point of the afternoon.

Lanarkshire beat Ayrshire 6 ½- 2 ½ in the other match on the second-day programme, taking the foursomes 2 ½- ½ and the singles 4-2.

In their final match, Renfrewshire can wrap up a place in the Scottish women’s county championship finals at The Hirself Golf Club, Coldstream in September by beating bottom dogs Ayrshire.

Foursomes: J Wilson & S Wood bt L Hendry & R Kennedy 1 hole; E Cuthill & A Young bt L Keohone & A Thompson 2 and 1; M Hughes & A Hendry halved with C Malcolm & D Watt (2 ½- ½ ).

Singles: Wilson halved with Hendry, Young halved with Kennedy, Cuthill bt A Glennie 3 and 2, Wood  bt M McPherson 4 and 3, L Lloyd bt Watt 2 holes, R Rankin lost to Malcolm 4 and 3 (4-2).
