SCOTT HENRY STEPS IN TO WIN SCOTTISH

STROKE-PLAY TITLE AS LEADER CRACKS

 

 

Stephen Hendry (Cardross), winner of three national titles at Under-18 level, chalked up his first men’s championship – the Scottish open amateur stroke-play – when long-time leader Ross McGowan faltered over the final holes in the fourth round.

Henry, 19, shot 71, 69, 68 and 69 for a total of 277. McGowan returned 68, 68, 68 and 74 for 278.

All in all it was a good tournament for Scotland’s young prospects. Ross Kellett tied for third place on 279 and Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie), recently returned from college in Florida, finished sixth on his own on 280.

Another college man, Wallace Booth (Comrie and Augusta State), also had a good few days. He had a 64 in his second round.
