SKANDIA JUNIOR GIRLS OPEN

SALLY WATSON FINISHES SEVENTH IN SWEDEN

Scottish Under-18 girls’ champion Sally Watson from South Queensferry finished a creditable seventh in a field of 49 for the Skandia Junior Girls Open over 54 holes at Kungsbacka Golf Club, near Gothenburg in Sweden at the weekend.

Sally, only 14 years old and a member of Elie & Earlsferry Golf Club in Fife, had rounds of 78, 76 and 79 for an aggregate of 233. She was the only British competitor in what is one of the leading Under-21 girls’ open events on the Continent.

Sally improved from 13th to joint fifth with a 76 on Saturday but she had her worst nine holes of the three days when she reached the turn in seven-over-par 43 on Sunday.

She had a triple bogey 6 at the short opening hole, another 6 at the long third and a double-bogey 6 at the fifth before going over par again at the seventh and eighth.

A birdie 3 at the ninth cheered up Miss Watson and she covered the inward nine holes in level par 36 with a birdie at the 12th and only one bogey, at the 14th.

Anna Nordqvist from Sweden, winner of the British girls’ open championship last year, outclassed the field with scores of 75, 70 and 73 for a two-over-par total of 218. She won by 10 shots from two compatriots, Therese Nilsson and Linn Gustafsson.
