NORTH DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

DUNCAN'S A YANKEE DOODLE DANDY

BACK ON HOME TURF AGAIN

Duncan Stewart, just home from a very good season for Jacksonville University, Florida on the American college golf circuit, continued in good form in his first tournament back in Scotland.

Stewart, from Grantown-on-Spey won the North District championship at windswept Lossiemouth on Saturday.

Duncan held his game together over the Moray Golf Club Old Course to post and opening 76, one above the CSS. At that point Duncan was four shots behind defending champion Michael MacDonald (Fortrose & Rosemarkie) and Bruce Thomson (Inverness).

Stewart wiped three shots off the deficit with birdies at the first, second and ninth holes in 32 to the turn. He then birdied the 13th and 17th - dropping only one shot, at the 14th,  in a brilliant score of four-under-par 67 for a total of 143 to win by two shots from MacDonald with Thomson in third place on 146.

John Forbes (Inverness) and Ryan Elder (Nairn Dunbar) tied for the North District youths' championship, staged in conjunction with the main event. The title and Murray Watt Trophy went to Forbes on the better inward half in their second round 78s.
