YOUNGSTER CLARE-MARIE IN
RENFREWSHIRE SEMI-FINALS

Fereneze teenager Clare-Marie Carlton meets Scottish veteran international team member Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) in what promises to be an intriguing first semi-final of the Renfrewshire women's county golf championship at Caldwell GC on Thursday.
Clare, who will not be 17 years old until August, had two good wins on the opening day of the match-play stages.
First she beat Addi Shamash (Kirkcudbright), a member of the SLGA Select who beat North-east District boys in a foursomes match at Cruden Bay on Sunday, by 4 and 3 and then Miss Carlton beat Carol Whyte (Windyhill), beaten semi-finalist last year, by 2 and 1.
Meanwhile leading qualifier Mrs Mack had beaten her veteran team skipper Heather Anderson (Caldwell) by one hole and then Lesley Robertson (Ranfurly Castle), also on the last green.
The other semi-final will feature Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) and Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle), winner of the title nine times.
Mrs Kyle had a good 6 and 5 first-round win over Jennifer Jenkins (Ralston) after starting with an eagle three and being three under par for the outward half.
Miss Jackson beat clubmate Gillian McGinlay by 7 and 6 after Gillian had toppled Karen Fitzgerald (Turnberry), a former champion and beaten finalist 12 months ago, by 4 and 3.

Quarter-finals _ Mack beat Robertson 1 hole, Carlton beat Whyte 2 and 1 Kyle beat Brabender 5 and 4, Jackson beat McGinlay 7 and 6.


TEENAGER JENNA IN LANARK LAST FOUR

LEADING qualifier Jenna Wilson from Strathaven swept through to Friday morning's semi-finals of the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship with two impressive wins at Cathkin Braes on Thursday.
Miss Wilson, 19, beat host-club member Pauline Warlow by 7 and 5 and then accounted for Moray Meechan (East Kilbride) by 6 and 5.
Jenna now plays Lesley Lloyd (Hayston), beaten finalist in 1998, 1999 and last year.
Miss Lloyd beat the 1995 champion, Ruth Rankin (Lanark) by 5 and 4 and then won on the last green against SLGA vice-chairman Pat Hutton, a member of the successful Scottish veteran women's team.
The other semi-final is between Janice Gardner (Drumpellier), the 1994 title-winner and beaten finalist in 2000, and May Hughes (Wishaw), who won the title in 1993 after losing in the 1991 final.
