YOUNGSTER CLARE-MARIE CARLTON WINS
RENFREWSHIRE MARATHON FINAL

Clare-Marie Carlton became one of the youngest winners of the Renfrewshire women's county golf championship in atrocious weather at Caldwell GC today.
The Fereneze junior member, who is only 16 years old, achieved the two best victories of her short career, beating first the top seed and Scotland veteran women's international player, Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) by 7 and 5 in the semi-finals.
Then Miss Carlton won at the 23rd hole in the final against former Scotland cap Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle), winner of the county title nine times previously.
Donna had beaten Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) by 4 and 3 in the second semi-final.
The final was a nip-and-tuck affair with never more than a hole in it either way. All square after 18 holes, it was the fifth extra hole before a decision was reached. Donna Jackson drove into the trees at the 23rd and could only hack out, leaving her young opponent to win the hole and become county champion.
