VIKKI'S GOOD START TO PAC-10
CHAMPIONSHIP IN OREGON
Vikki Laing has made a good start to the Women's Pac-10 college golf championship at the Trysting Tree Golf Club course at Corvallis, Oregon.
The Musselburgh player, in the final year of her golf scholarship at the University of California, shot a one-under-par 71 to be lying joint third at the end of the first day in the three-round championship.
Perhaps Vikki felt at home in the conditions, the players having to contend with rain, hail and generally cold weather.
One of Vikki's team-mates, Sarah Huarte, is sharing the lead with Swedish player, Mikaela Parmlid (Southern California), on the two-under-par 70 mark.
English girl Rachel Bell, beaten finalist in the British girls' championship at Blairgowrie two or three years ago and now a student at Southern California, is tied for 24th place after a 77.
California, who have won the Oregon State Invitiational over the Trysting Tree course for the past three years and are ranked fifth nationally, have opened up a two-stroke lead with a total of four-over-par 292. Southern California (294) are second with UCLA (298) lying third.
Arizona, winners of the last three Pac-10 championships, are already seven strokes off California's pace, ending the first day in fourth place with a total of 299.
California head coch Nancy McDaniel said:
"We have to keep plugging away. Sarah and Vikki showed a lot of focus today. They're doing what they do best, leading the team in the right direction."
California have won five tournaments over the 2002-2003 college season but have never won the Pac-10 championship. Their best finish in the event was a tie for third last year.
