VIKKI HEADS SWEDE AT LAST
TO SCORE SECOND U.S. WIN
Vikki Laing won the Women’s Pac-10 Conference championship individual title after a thrilling finish at Trysting Tree Golf Club, Corvallis in Oregon.
The Curtis Cup Scot from Musselburgh, a golf scholarship student at the University of California, shot a final round of one-over-par 73 for a total of level par 216 to edge out Sweden’s Mikaela Parmlid (Southern California) by one stroke.
Mikaela signed off with a 74 for 217.
Vikki’s outstanding performance, her second win on the American women’s college circuit, spearheaded California to their sixth team win of the 2002-2003 season.
Vikki and Mikaela, playing together in the final group, were level with six holes to play. Then came a ding-dong finish with the Scot birdieing the 13th to lead, only to be pegged back by the Swede’s birdie at the next.
Mikaela bogeyed the 14th for Vikki to edge ahead again but then Miss Laing bogeyed the 16th for the pair to be level with two to play.
They both parred the 17th and then Miss Parmlid bogeyed the last and Vikki's par figure won her the title.
English player Rachel Bell from Ganton, Yorkshire and a student at Southern Cal finished in tie for 45th place with a total of 241.
California (892) won the team championship from Arizona (897) with UCLA (902) third and Southern California (903) fourth.
