JUST CHAMPION! NOW CLARE-MARIE
GETS "HELEN HOLM" DEBUT CHANCE

BARRHEAD teenager Clare-Marie Carlton has been given a late call into the star-studded field for the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon this weekend. It's the 16-year-old Fereneze junior's debut appearance and came hard on the heels of winning the Renfrewshire women's county championship at Caldwell early on Friday evening.
Addi Shamash (Kirkcudbright), French challenger Beatrice Soubiron, Amy Davies (Bothwell Castle) and Rachel Adby (Sandiway) all withdrew from the "Helen Holm" championship for a variety of reasons yesterday, leaving SLGA tournament secretary Gillian Roy with the unenviable task of trying to find low-handicap players to plug the gaps.
Clare-Marie jumped at the chance of playing in her biggest tournament yet.
Four members of last summer's Great Britain & Ireland team are playing in the 54-hole event which encompasses two rounds over Troon Portland on Saturday and one round over Royal Troon on Sunday.
They are Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton), Kerry Smith (Waterlooville), Sarah Jones (Pennard) and Fame More (Chesterfeld).
Becky Brewerton (Abergele), who should have been picked by the Curtis Cup selectors for the 2002 match at Fox Chapel, Pittsburgh but wasn't, went on to win the European women's amateur championship and the British women's open amateur stroke-play title after being snubbed.
The 20-year-old Welsh ace, who could turn pro before the 2004 "Helen Holm," finished second to Heather Stirling (Bridge of Allan) last year. Heather is now a rookie pro on the American Futures Tour and the biggest threat to Becky's title hopes may come from Sophie Giquel from Lyon, who beaten in the final of the French Under-21 open girls' championship at Paris St Cloud on Monday.
If there is to be a Scot following in Heather Stirling's footsteps, the most likely contenders are Clare Queen (Drumpellier), winner of the Scottish universities' women's title this week, Stirling University students Lynn Kenny and Lesley Mackay or British mid-amateur champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven).
