ANNE LAING EQUALS TROON PORTLAND
RECORD TO LEAD IN "HELEN HOLM"
British women's mid-amateur champion Anne Laing from Vale of Leven produced her best ever score over the Troon Portland links in cold, damp and windy conditions to equal the course record and open up a clear lead in the first round of the 54-hole Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship.
After returning a brilliant score of 67, the 28-year-old former Scottish champion, who works as a lecturer at Elmwood College, Cupar, said: "I've never done better than a 71 round Troon Portland before. The Troon courses are not the easiest of places to score well and the weather for the 'Helen Holm' is usually awful so I am probably as surprised as I am pleased with that score."
Anne's scorecard for her eight-under-par figures, which equalled the 67 returned by Joanne Hockley from Felixstowe Ferry when she won the "Helen Holm" by eight strokes in 1996, were:
OUT 5 4 4 2 4 3 4 3 4 33 (five under)
IN 3 5 4 4 4 4 2 4 4 34 (three under)
